Bankim Chandra was a famous Bengali writer of novels and poetry. He was born on 27 June 1838 in Kanthalpara,near Naihati, Bengal. His works were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English. India,s national anthem "Vande Mataram" is taken from his novel "Anandmath".
Bankim Chandra wrote 13 novels in Bengali.
 He died on 8 April 1894 in Kolkata.

Kapal Kundala is first major publication of Bankim Chandra. It was published in 1866.
